Abstract

This paper presents a study and a discussion on the place of object-based systems for representing real-world knowledge. It does not include any definitive and final proposition on the question, but shows instead that many things remain and deserve to be debated. This paper is rather a constructive synthesis based on a series of previous work done by the authors. Object-based representation are introduced along with description logics, elements on semantic web, and on document manipulation. The principles of the forinatisms are given and discussed, and a number of research directions are proposed, especially involving the combination of the different formalisms for representing knowledge. Finally, let us mention that this paper is kindly dedicated to Jean-François Perrot, trying to debate and to discuss the scientific elements with elegance and spirit.
